Face it, you'd have a better chance of tossing a dart at a board full of names right now than guessing who is going to be the winner of the*2011 British Open (did you have Louis Oosthuizen last year?), but we try our hardest to give you the best pick. So, without further ado, these are who we've come up with as the best chances at Royal St. George's.
Jay Busbee (@jaybusbee) -- Despite what I said about the unlikelihood of Rory McIlroy winning, I'm going to stick with him. The guy's had a lead in, what, seven of the last eight majors? Something like that, and I think we're on the cusp of greatness here. If he falls short, hey, so be it. But what we learned about him at Congressional was that he can bounce back from horrible performances in short order; that kind of mental toughness is exactly what you need to start a majors-winning run.
Jonathan Wall (@jonathanrwall) -- Like the U.S. Open, this major has that unpredictable feel, where I think you'd have a better chance of picking the winner if you pulled a name from a hat. But since I never do anything easy, I spent some time going through the field and decided on Jason Day. He finished runner-up at the Masters and U.S. Open, and I really like the way he works the ball off the tee, something I think will be critical on Royal St. George's unpredictable fairways. Also, I know PGA Tour stats don't matter when you play a links-style course, but being tops in sand saves and in the top-20 birdies and scoring average is always nice. I believe he has the total package to join Greg Norman as the second Aussie to win the Claret Jug at Royal St. George's.
Shane Bacon (@shanebacon) -- Here is my formula for my pick. A top-5 player in the world + a recent and multiple winner this season - an American + a European - a previous major winner + a guy made to walk away with this trophy. That came up with one name and one name only: Luke Donald. He is as good a pick as any, and he seems finally ready to claim this elusive trophy. Can he do it? I sure hope so.
