Yesterday I asked if it was possible to be your own father. Here is the question. (While true that one cannot travel back in time to kill one's father without creating a paradox, is it possible to travel back in time and become your own father without falling afoul of a paradox? Here's the scenario. As a grown man you figure a way to travel back in time and out of curiosity you wish to meet the father you never knew. All your life your mother has informed you that he showed up and left after that one intimate evening. You travel back in time and can only seem to locate your mother as a young woman. This parts a little creepy but bear with me. After observing her for awhile you become smitten (Odeipus) with this young version of a woman you've always loved and partake of the forbidden fruit, so to speak. Afterwords, in your shame you travel back to the future, unaware you just made your mother pregnant. ( months later she gives birth to a bouncing baby boy who just happens to be you. Is there a paradox?) After asking the question it dawned on me that it was very male specific and I wondered how it might work for a female. So lets try this out and see what happens. Let's say a young woman discovers a way to travel back in time and she travels to a point when her grandfather was a young man. They meet at a frat party and after a night of fun they do the deed and never see each other again, all the while she is unaware of his identity. Soon she realizes she has become pregnant and doesn't wish to take a bastard child back to the future with her so carries it to term and leaves it at an orphanage. Meanwhile her grandfather (ignorant of what has occurred) meets her grandmother and have a son of about the same age as the woman's daughter, who will grow up to be her father. He in turn meets a young woman who has no idea who her parents were as she was adopted shortly after birth. (the woman's child) They fall in love, get married and give birth to the woman, making her daughter her mother and she becomes her own grandmother. Paradox?
