Any Fiat Multipla Owners Have Problem with Lag?

Hi. I recently bought an '05, 1.9 JTD Fiat Multipla manual (new shape) and when pulling away from stop in 1st gear there is a lot of lag (about 3 seconds) followed by black smoke from the exhaust. Any suggestions as to what this may be?
 
Didn't know those were still in production. They have a 'hamster cage' for a motor so don't expect any kind of performance from this. OIl, or oily fluid is finding it's way out thru the exhaust. Your tranny needs service and that's not a DIY job.
