I realize this is my second Gerber question this week but I was impressed with his play last night. Obviously Toronto had the option of picking him up on waivers before any of the playoff bound teams. At one point there were rumors that the Leafs were going to flip him to someone else but nothing materialized.
Anyone know who the team interested was?
I think he could have made a great addition to someone wanting insurance. Maybe Calgary, the Wings, or Washington. He certainly outplayed Theodore last night.
Will he be in the NHL next year?
LITY, thanks I was wondering who was interested. I'm surprised that the Caps did not try to address their goalie situation. IMO that is what keeps them from true contender status in the East. Obviously they are committed to Theo for next year, that 4M will be hard to move. That said a Gerber would have been an upgrade at backup who could step in if and when Theo faltered.
I always felt Gerber did not get a fair chance in Ottawa after the first dismal season. Last year he led them to a great start and was pushed aside for Emery when he came back from injury. Gerber was never the same after - seemed like he felt there was nothing else he could do to prove himself.
As much as ottawa fans have lamented their goaltending this year, it hasn't been that bad. Their 184 goals aginst is 12th in the league, the problem has been scoring. Their Goals against is better than Calgary
VIP- remember he was on reentry waivers so the cost was only about 430K as ottawa has to pick up 1/2.
LITY, I agree that the Det situation is better than the Caps. As you said the offence is proven and in my opinion the defense is better so there will be less pressure on the Goalies. Conklin is as good or better than Gerber and Osgood has a way of finding his game come playoff time. Also if it finishes Wings-Sharks- Flames, then the Sharks will get the Flames in round 2 assuming they all win. I don't like that matchup for SJ, they always have problems with the Flames. Then you are looking at a easier route to the semis for the wings and facing the winner of a sharks flame series that will be running on empty much like Dallas was last year. Your Hawks could throw a monkey wrench in that senario, they seem to play the Wings well.
In the East anything can happen, I would not be surprised with a Bruins or Caps first round exit. Devils are starting to look scary. Bobs Flyers- goaltending is the question mark? In fact a lot of teams in the east have that issue.
