My son is nearly 18 months old and has been a late developer with walking. He didn't walk at all until 15 months, preferring to crawl or bottom shuffle. He has been walking quite well indoors for a couple of weeks now, seeming to (finally) prefer walking to crawling, and so we had his first shoes fitted. Now he seems to almost have regressed with the walking and gone back to crawling, especially but not only when wearing his shoes.

No matter how much positive encouragement we give, he just wants to crawl everywhere, especially outdoors. He's tearing holes in the knees of his trousers, hurting his hands on the ground outside, not to mention all the extra washing of his clothes. (Its damp and muddy outdoors at this time of year in UK.) He is heavy and I have already injured my back and have tennis elbow from constantly carrying him for so many months.

My Health Visitor says he is developmentally normal, as he CAN walk but is simply choosing not to do so. She has no suggestions other than to keep trying, but I'm getting to my wits end with it all!! When I hold his arms or hands, he just screams and throws himself down.

Please can anyone here give me any helpful words of advice?

perhaps the shoes didn't fit properly he's obviously not comfortable walking for some reason.you'll just have to not give in when he wants to be carried all the time you're going to have to be firm. But of course do get him checked by your gp to be sure there is nothing wrong with his ankles legs or hips as this could be stopping him wanting to be upright too.

Hi, try not to worry. The more u push children the less they will do, ignore it and carry on, soon enough he will get up and go again, he is till very young and alot Of babies don't start walking til alot later, he has proved he can walk now, so no problems with health, just let him be until he wants to start again :) good luck

buy him one tough outdoor suit, maybe a set of overalls to protect the rest of the clothes. Wash it when it is really stiff with mud. He's not actually hurting his hands, he'll learn.

you can't lead this horse to water, leave him to crawl and he'll work it out.
