...consumption before I buy one , ? The Volvo V70XC 2.4T Petrol, whats the the real use mpg like , I don´t want to make a mistake as I´m thinking the diesel fwd V70 maybe far more wiser buy with maybe 40plus mpg . Its 2500 more expensive second hand though, take 2 years to recover that difference , any thoughts ?

If you need to ask about the fuel consumption then the 2.4 turbo petrol isnt for you. Expect 20-22 around town, 26-30 on long journeys. Diesel will be 40+ at all times unless you hammer it everywhere, which, since you're asking about economy, I'm sure you wont be. The diesel will also depreciate less in 2 years.

I investigated all of the above recently as I had to buy a car to use for work, covering 1000 motorway miles per week. I narrowed my choices down to 3 - Volvo, Lexus or Subaru. I eventually went for a Subaru Legacy 3.0, which I get 31mpg from on long journeys.

Assuming both are manual, the diesel should average 44mpg, the petrol 26mpg. If you cover a few miles, that's a hell of a difference.
As a rough guide, 10k miles in the diesel would cost around £1,030 in fuel. The petrol would cost £1,570. You'd need to be doing a high mileage to recover the difference in two years.
