i am the proud owner of a 1986 ford escort L. the car itself isnt good looking so i fabricated a few body modifications and im about to do paint on it. but ive never had a car that was carburated, and i wanna play around with the engine a bit. what are some of the cheapest most logical things i can do to make my car faster?
 
Drive it off a cliff. This improves acceleration greatly, providing up to 1G acceleration. If you do 1/4 mile vertical, this allows for a 9 second quarter mile, better performance than nitrous or turbos.
 
get a running start before you pass someone, that way it will look like your going real fast when you blow by them.
sorry, that car was not built for speed, all you can do is keep it in good tune and hope for the best,
i had one 86model got 38mpg that's what its good for.
 
weber two barrel carbie, performance air cleaner, headers and sports exhaust, if you want to spend a bit more, research formula ford as they used the escort engine, two litre head on a 1.6 litre engine, shaved to increase compression, a formula ford cam, cosworth valve springs, o/s pistons. had one with a formula ford engine and it went pretty well for what was a basic cheap fun little car. or the other option would be to reduce compression and run a turbo. or you can do what a guy in Australia did and stuff in a 5.8ltr ford v8, i think that goes really well.
 
You have a ford escort which can be classified as JUNK when it was new,give up and buy a honda.
