archive in DVD or DivX ?

I have over 4 thousand DVD titles, and I cant keep them on the disc itself, they are going bad, some wont read anymore and I don't know why. I want to keep a copy of them on and external hard drive, and I was wondering whether I should just copy them on the hard disk as a DVD image, or convert them to DivX? if I do convert them, do I loose a noticeable amount of quality? is it a good idea to save up disc space, or not?
 
in dvd.
you need external hdd up to 20tb
(4000 dvds by 4gb = 16000gb = 16tb)
