I know they can't talk on cell phones bluetooth or otherwise while driving, but my teen says they (under 18) can't own bluetooth devices. True or not?
we are in California
as of July 1, 2008The first law prohibits all drivers from using a handheld wireless telephone while operating a motor vehicle, (California Vehicle Code [VC] §23123). Motorists 18 and over may use a “hands-free device.” The second law prohibits drivers under the age of 18 from using a wireless telephone or hands-free device while operating a motor vehicle (VC §23124).

As you'll note from the statute you cited, it only applies to using a bluetooth device while driving. It does not bar children from owning them.

since when could minors not use hands free devices in cars?
must be a city ordinance.

send your kid into a store to buy one, i really can't see a police officer charging him with an analog of attempting to purchase alcohol

There is no age restriction on hands free devices.

I suppose a store could have a policy refusing to sell them to minors, but I don't see why.
