Are DirectX and Xvid safe to download and use?

A message on some sites say DirectX may harm my computer. No such message appears for Xvid.. I think I need both applications to watch Xvid movies. Neither of these came with my computer, and I'm not sure whether to download them, or not to.
 
No, they will, of course, break your computer. Never download those programs!!11!!
