Are Google Earth satellite images ever updated? If so, how often?

I have updated to the latest free version of Google Earth (5.0) but I am a little disappointed at the satellite images. They don't seem to be recent. Is there a way I can update them? or How often does Google update the satellite images? How can I know approximately how old (at least what year) the images are? Thanks.

they do get updated, but it can take years for the next picture to be taken. You cannot update them yourself, sorry.
