No limewire is great and it is free. That is what makes it legal they are not getting any money for the songs just the service.
 
Disregard what the other person said, Napster never made money off songs, their profits came from advertisers. Limewire, Bearshare, etc. are just as illegal. You really are not going to find no-strings-attached free music online from any major artists. If you want free music then just "pirate" it...
 
These programs are called Peer2Peer (P2P) programs. The programs are not illegal. Sharing copyrighted content is illegal. The record and movie industries are trying to make them illegal by sueing them in courts. So far with mixed success.
 
Limewire and programs like it are not illegal.BUT using them to download and share copyrighted music and videos (which is what 99% of their users are doing) IS illegal.
