Are suicide knobs legal in Massachusetts if they're on an original old car?

I've heard talk that they're illegal in most places, and if something's illegal SOMEWHERE, it's likely illegal in Massachusetts. Now I understand putting one on a new car with power steering is a little senseless, but what about on an old car from say, the 40's or so? A big heavy thing without power steering. Or what if there's already one on there, that's been there for the last 50 years? I couldn't find any info on the RMV website, but does anyone know if they're grandfathered in?

(Or are they even illegal in MA? I don't even officially know)
 
no knobs were ever standard equipment. so if it is there it was added.
