Are the power governments REALLY interested in finding cheaper, efficient

energy fuels? Lots of research going on into new renewable energy, such as: hydrogen, wind, etc...but is this a 'profitable' area and "really" what they want? How will they create the revenues generated from oil and gas currently? Or when that dwindles, will we see more wars over natural resources such as water?
No silly answers please, it's a cynical but serious 'opinion seeking' question.
