EDITED ANSWER:

Nitrogen is inert and therefore safer. If the wheels get overheated due to friction, they are less likely to combust due to the absense of oxygen.. but then again, oxygen is in the air.

i would say the advantage is negligible.

... instead of normal air? I am a competitive mountain bike rider and just wondered if there would be any endurance or speed advantage to filling my tyres with nitrogen. Is there?

You've just made my head hurt.
This is so typical of our over done society.
If it were a scientific experiment exploring the pressure/speed/grip co-valency of different tyre types against pressure/tyre crosswidth,
then your question might have some relevance. But only if they were filled with nitrogen.
BUT YOU'RE JUST RIDING A F""^^))ING BIKE ! Albeit over rough terrain.
Pump the tyres up and get on with it.
