Are there any less expensive alternatives to the Kindle?

I would really like an e-book reader, but am leery of buying something as expensive as the Kindle. I'm a college student, and can't quite afford it. I've looked for ways to turn my DS Lite into one, but none seem to offer bookmarking, or highlighting. I would love it to read just about any e-book format, but PDF, TXT, and the main formats are obviously preferred. Thanks for any help!
