The S40 in particular but Volvo sedans in general. I am in love with a used 2000 Volvo S40 with about 80K miles. It has a clean carfax and a good price.

I am just concerned with maintenance and upkeep expecially when it hits over the 100K miles mark. Please advise. Thanks.

New Volvo's are rated by Consumer Reports magazine as 16th out of 34 brands -- in the middle -- but that doesn't mean much when a car gets up to 80K-100K miles. In fact, they found that S40s, as they get older, have problems in the electrical system, fuel system, climate system, power equipment, and in the audio system.

The ONLY way to know the condition of a specific car, especially one with high mileage, is to have it inspected by a professional mechanic. Used cars are sold "as-is", so the time to find out if it has problems is BEFORE you buy, not after. A clean Carfax doesn't tell you anything about a car's condition.
