I have requested information from many different 'tour' sites that angle schools, students and teachers. The 'idea' sounds great, but what I have found to be the most frustrating is this: schools today are in so much trouble. They do not think past their standard tests and the competition between states. When I was in middle school, students, teachers, parents made great plans and cooperated with tour groups so that we, the students would actually be able to experience history in other parts of the country.

Today, there is no money. Parents don't have the money. Negative news reports about teens 'missing, kidnapped', etc. have frightened parents and they don't want to support their children going to other places for fear they won't return.

I would love for my 8th grade students to experience even half of what I did by traveling and 'seeing' the history we only read about, but there is very , very little support in the school system for these kinds of trips.

I would love to participate - but if you can find a way to help us (other teachers who feel like me) convice the school systems, the principals, and parents that traveling and learning is still a good thing - I'd jump at the chance!!!
