Are you supposed to unplug extension chords when you go on vacation?

I was having a conversation with my friends at lunch and they were saying that it wastes electrity just having the chord in the outlit.
 
if it's a power strip with that little light yup and if it's connected to equipment that's on standby waiting to be turned on then yes but it's pennies
 
Leaving extension cords plugged in does not waste electricity. Effectively, there is no significant leakage current.
