I have been unemployed since January 2008 and no i do not claim any unemployment benefits. Neither do I claim any disability. I saved $210,000 from 1992 to 2007. $125,000 has been used since January 2008 and I try not to buy anything unnecessary. I only have $85,000 left and I feel this will run out too and I still won't be able to get job. I have applied a lot of places for work. I have bachelor of science in mathematics. I refuse to apply fast food, minimum wage jobs, unskilled labor jobs or any job that does not provide health insurance benefits.
 
Oh come on, you don't have to lie to us. We all know your parents provide everything for you.

Your situation sounds quite similar to mine. I did find another job, but it's at half the pay. I have a small amount left from my severence, and one small savings account. After that, I'll have to look at my permanent savings. I'm just trying to make things stretch as far as possible. Thank God, I saved!
 
You should have started your own company. I am sure you have the needed skills to do so and by now you could have been a success. Give being self employed some thought. I haven't really worked but contracts here and there since December 2008, I've sent out hundreds of resumes and no luck. It's bad out there.
 
If you have spent 125k in 2 years then I find it hard to believe you didn't spend it on anything unnecessary.

I am unemployed by choice because like you I saved some money after I sold my little business and finished college and wanted to do some traveling. I have much less left remaining than you and I am not sure what the best thing to do is. I have considered looking to teach overseas.
 
I don't know why you aren't claiming unemployment since it is money that YOU paid into and have every right to claim. I admire your ability to save, though.

I agree with the other answerer that said you might want to look into starting something on your own, especially if you still have some money that you can put into a small business.

The good thing about working at a fast food place is that you get to eat regularly. Plus, you meet some down-to-earth people that will enrich your people skills. No offense intended but you do sound a little "starchy" and self righteous to me; a few weeks working in food service would be very instructive for you. Most of the big food chains do offer good benefits, too. Think about it.

I've been out of work for two years also. I have run through the 150k or so I had and am about broke. I do have a rental house with about 50k equity in it though.
