Assuming the music is aggressive and the venue has a "pit" where people stand and dance/mosh/crowdsurf, you are taking a big risk by moving to the near-stage area.
In almost all the aggressive concerts I've been to there's usually a big push towards the stage where people can easily get crushed or suffocated.
To answer the 2nd, if a pit breaks out it is typically not too hard to make your way out of it. Most decent "pit-ers" will not bother you. However some folks get carried away and consider you fair game.
If you are worried for bodily harm, your best bet is to stay in the seating area.
