Auto tranny shifter button on 1998 Chevy Malibu shifter sticky, how to...

...free up (where to lube?)? We have a 1998 Chevrolet Malibu that has over 154,000 miles and it doesn't get driven as much now as it did. The button that you push in on the automatic transmission shifter is sticking just a bit when you go to shove it in to move the shifter to put it in drive or whatever. It was driven by a heavy smoker for almost nine years, and I thought it was the tar causing it to stick when it got cold. I WD-40'd it while pushing the button in and letting it pop back out. It is still a bit sticky, especially when the temperature drops. Is there a way to take the T handle part off safely and lube the cable and button from the inside to free the button up a little more? Thanks in advance.
