How could one become a principal of a school and not have received training in regard to school yard bullying?

To solve the problem devise a zero tolerance programme where children and parents are aware of the positive changes a school is making in regard to curbing bullying via school newsletters. Have charismatic teachers talk to each year level and have the students complete interactive programmes that teaches them what is bullying behaviour, how to deal with it and report it. Hold this each year, a day/week of anti-bullying that could be taught during English or whatever other class that is deemed appropriate.

If all of the above has been implemented and a student bullies, I'd suspend them - zero tolerance.

Gossip is virtually impossible to stop since it also occurs outside of school. However, one could confront the rumor spreaders and enforce some kind of punishment for doing that. As far as factionalism, I would guess bringing people together in small groups to discover that they really aren't that different and fostering an atmosphere of respect would work.

When I was in high school we had a GREAT speaker come and lecture about drugs. I remember his stories, and how he would shout, "FOR WHAAAAAT." It was so powerful. He had private meetings after the program where kids could meet in small groups and discuss, etc. It was probably the best thing I experienced in high school. And I never did drugs! Really have a hugely powerful speaker come in, and then break down into small groups to discuss.

Theres not much you could do about it, kids will be kids and spreak gossip no matter what. The best you could do is deal with other things. Maybe hold a speech about it or something, but thats most likely not going to help
