best area of San Fran to go on vacation?

Hi,
I would love to book a vacation to san francisco from NY, and maybe go to LA for a few day too.
What is the best area in san fran to go? I am looking at hotels and all online but no idea of the areas closest to everything, like alcatraz, golden gate bridge etc, is this all just down town san fran?

Try Motel 6 in SF for lower rates. You don't say what time of yr you will go and may through Sep is high tourist season and much costlier.
You could stay anywhere in SF and it would be no problem to see what you want to see. Just about all areas are interesting in SF. Very good transom compared to most other cities (even though many people disagree it's only because they haven't tried to use transpo in cities like LA, Detroit, KC and others).
Biggest tourist area is the wharf, China Town, downtown, Golden Gate Park, Bridge and Sausalito.
You would be reasonably close if at any downtown motel/hotel. Check on line maps. A lot of night life as well and depending on your personal life style SF is basically the "Queen Of Gay Life".
You might even consider staying south of the airport in San Mateo county as accommodations would be cheaper.
Check on Craig's List as well.

A good idea is regardless if you visit in the summer always carry a light weight jacket, sweater, sweat shirt if out for quite a while into the evening/night hrs. It cools off a lot when the sun goes down.
