Best digital camera for a novice?

I'm looking to buy a camera and pursue photography as a hobby, and have no idea what direction to go in. I'm looking for something hopefully less than $200, but I'll go above if necessary. I know nothing about photo taking/lighting, etc., nor do I know anything about pro's and con's of digital camera's on the market.

you are looking to point-and-shoot camera type

i highly recommend the brand Canon , it's really compact and provide a close to professional photos
