Best place for vacation in California?

My husband and I are looking to go to CA for vacation. We want to see the forests and beaches and not spend too much. Any suggestions?
 
Well, forests are going to be more north of LA, only if you want to be near Ocean, otherwise there are forests all over.

The more north you go the less things will cost, but i really have no clue, I'v only been to deigo, and now live in Kansas, so everything here is cheap.
