Bike chain round waist?

So I had to put my bike chain (as in the one I use to lock it up) round my waist to get it to work today. On arriving my boss said "ooh, you have to be careful with your chain round your waist, but I'm sure you've heard all the horror stories...".

I was too embarressed to admit I hadn't, so someone explain to me :)
Have people been ripped in half or something for having their chain round their waist in a crash?
I was hoping for (obviously exagerated) tales of people being torn in half! The real answer is boring in comparrison lol

Regardless, I will keep it in my bag from now on!

Hi dude as said below PANIC NOT.. If you fall off your bike the chain might add to injury but that would be the least of your probs..As i always say its not the fall that hurts its the sudden stop LOL..There are safer places to keep your chain but don't think of negatives while driving the 2 wheels just the pleasure and stay safe, its the other drivers on the road that you need to be carefull of (the ones that don't watch out for the 2 wheels) , Just a thought dude a bungee cord will keep the chain on the seat behind you perfectly..Hope this helps,Best Regards Steve

If you have an off you could get hooked on the bike and dragged along with it rather than sliding away from it, you could get snagged on a vehicle that was involved and dragged along with it or get caught up and snagged on road side furniture. And the chain can dig into you leaving some very nasty bruises both internally and externally .
