bike recommendations: commuter, hybrid, mtn, not sure what to get under $500?

I've just started the bike buying process and realizing that I don't know where to go from here.
Logistics:
5'2'' female
road biking (pleasure, commuting)
some gravel and easy mountain bike trails

I'm looking to spend under $500 and now is a great time to buy with clearance sales. I'm not picky on brand or having the latest or greatest. Any suggestions would be helpful.

Visit the local bike shop and talk with them. It will depend on where and how you want to use the bike. A hybrid or a comfort bike can be had for that amound or less.
