Blackberry running slow... any suggestions?

I have a Blackberry World Edition 8830 and I have been noticing it is really slow when sending out a text. It seems to take a couple minutes sometimes. Can anyone tell m e how to resolve this? I have a lot of old messages so I probably need to do a mass delete of my old messages but I'm not sure how...
