Blu Ray Question?

A quick question about Blu Ray players. Will standard DVD's work in Blu Ray players or will we need to have both to watch standard dvd's and blu ray disks?
 
I know that dvds will play on all of the blu-ray players, but I don't know if they upconvert dvds, but ps3's i know will upconvert the quality of the picture and sound of dvds, ps2 games, ps1 games, and even downloaded video files
