My right low beam headlight is out(the main light). It is very expensive to replace this light at the dealer. I took it to Car X because they do headlights and the guy said I can order the part myself to avoid the mark up if they order it and they will put it in and only charge labor. My question is, what light to order? My book says an H7 55 watt. How do I tell if it is a xenon light or a regular light-my manual doesn't tell me how I know? Is there an issue with Car X doing it? Please help me.

No, as long as they're a reputable car servicer it's fine. The best thing is just to take the bulb out and show it to them. That will have all of the numbers/info on it required to do it.
The other option is to buy the bulb from the dealer and install it yourself. I did that on my BMW 3 series, it took me about an hour because I had trouble getting to it, but all I had to do was twist the light socket out, put the bulb in, then twist it so it locks back into place.

There are two different bulbs your vehicle may have. One is the H7 which is inexpensive ($8-$14) or a D2S which is a HID bulb. The D2S is going to run you between $80-$140 depending where you get it from. The best way to tell what you need is to try to see the part number on the old bulb. The number will be marked right on it. Just because the owners manual says H7 you can't always go by that. Owners manuals are a generalized manual for all the 2001 X5s. Parts may differ.
