On Thursday morning, many of us awoke to reports that a loaf of marijuana had allegedly been delivered to the home of Cincinnati Bengals receiver Jerome Simpson.
Here are a few key details, from the Cincinnati Enquirer:
In addition to the package of 2.5 pounds of California marijuana, airport police also found six more pounds of pot and paraphernalia inside the home.
In addition to Simpson, Bengals teammate Anthony Collins was present when a woman, Aleen Smith, 27, accepted the package Tuesday. Gregory identified Smith as Simpson's girlfriend but said she was not sure if the two lived together. Authorities detained Simpson and Collins, but no one was arrested.
So, um ... 8.5 pounds of marijuana seems like enough to get a fella through the winter. Apparently the 2.5-pounder had crossed multiple state lines prior to delivery, so someone is facing some serious charges here. Simpson was excused from Thursday's practice; his status for Sunday's game against San Francisco is not yet known. On Thursday afternoon, another member of the Bengals offense made some news — or rather, the NFL made news via running back Cedric Benson.
Benson has reportedly been notified of a three-game suspension for violations of the player conduct policy. You'll recall that Benson was arrested over the summer, during the lockout, for alleged assault. He pleaded no contest to misdemeanor charges and served jail time. We originally thought he would avoid league suspension due to the timing of the incident, but apparently not. Yahoo!'s Michael Silver reports that Benson will play in Week 3, then appeal next Tuesday. If his appeal fails, Benson would miss games against Buffalo, Jacksonville, and Indianapolis — and if that happens, fantasy owners become collateral damage in the league's power play. Those three match-ups are zesty.
Bernard Scott is the priority add if you're shopping for Benson replacements. We've had this fire-drill a few times before. Brian Leonard should see an uptick in usage, too. If your fake team is off to a strong start, you might consider a lowball offer on Cedric this week. There's a chance this suspension will be reduced, plus the Bengals have the Rams and Cards waiting in Weeks 15-16.
The fantasy fallout from the Simpson situation is fairly minimal, since we're not exactly talking about an unstoppable passing attack here. AJ Green is already heavily owned in Yahoo! leagues (85 percent), and tight end Jermaine Gresham is an established commodity as well. If you're in a giant PPR league, maybe you take a shot with Andre Caldwell. He was in line for additional targets following the season-ending injury to Jordan Shipley. But I don't make that recommendation with any real enthusiasm.
