Buying my first gun ever! Suggestions?!?

I am very interested in buying a gun. I have fired pretty much all there is out there for the civilian market. I really like the M&P .40. I am looking for self defense as well as fun shooter. I either would like a hand gun but would prefer an assault rifle or shotgun. I really like the AR system and have fired the AR-15 before and enjoy that. I don't know much about the AK-47 system. I am not sure about a shotgun either. What should be my first buy. My budget is around $1000-1500. I want something that I can upgrade as I go along. I have been shooting for many years now.
 
For that much you could get a nice AR-15 system. I like them, they're easy to fire, but they jam like crazy. We own a Smith and Wesson .40 which is nice and a Sig Sauer .45 which is absolutely amazing. If I were in your position, I would try and get an M14 or an M1. Something classic. That's just me, though.
