By walking3 mph for one period of time and6 mph for another, Roger traveled39 miles. Had he walked
1 mph faster throughout, he would havegone47 miles. How many hours did he walk at3 mph?

e.g. 3mph x 5 = 15
6mph x 4 = 24 = 39 mph

9 miles, 39 + 9 = 48... One away, so just play around with the (5 & 4) that being the Hour's #, ok : )

Use a simultaneous equation. Call the time spent walking at 3mph "x" and the time spent walking at 6mph "y".

3x + 6y = 39 (X4)
4x + 7y = 47 (X3)

12x + 24y = 156
12x + 21y = 141
3y = 15
y = 5

3x + (6 X 5) = 39
3x + 30 = 39
3x = 9
x = 3

so x = 3 and y = 5.

From this we can say that Roger walked at 3 mph for 3 hours.

amount of time he walked 3mph = x
amount of time he walked 6mph = y

3*x + 6*y = 39
4*x + 7*y = 47

solving the equations get's us:
x = 3
y = 5

So roger walked 3 hours at 3mph

e.g. 3mph x 5 = 15
6mph x 4 = 24 = 39 mph

9 miles, 39 + 9 = 48... One away, so just play around with the (5 & 4) that being the Hour's #, ok : )
