My entire story deals with a mythical creature-type thingie that I made-up. The story basically tells the life of one of these characters and her quest and whatnot.

Small description (If this helps):
Human-like in appearance, vividly colored eyes (turquoise, purple, green, etc.), advanced senses and speed, supernatural powers, still eat, sleep, act like humans. I don't want to give everything away.

How can I properly introduce a completely new species in the beginning of my story without confusing readers? I plan on explaining somethings they can do and what not throughout the novel, but there is a lot to cover. Do I just go straight into it, explaining a few details here and there, hoping the reader will catch on soon? Or do I have to explain something as soon as I mention it? I'm not even sure I know how to word this question. Anyway, how would I introduce these characters?

Thanks in advance!
