I was told there were two kittens left alone in a box in someones garden. I went to see them, where I found a soaking wet towel in a (of course) soaking wet box. There was food, however it was drowned in water; thus no food to get to. There was also a small house (like the ones for dogs) so they did have some shelter. I live in Norway. I imagine there max temperature was 14 degrees celcius. However it was poring rain the previous two days.
Apparently the family who owned the kittens had gone on holiday for a week. They consulted a veterinarian whether the kittens could be left outside WITH their mother. They also got someone to feed them (though it looked like they didn't do a good job at that).
Not knowing they had a mother, I took them home with me and contacted the national welfare organisation who supported my actions and in the end found them new homes within the week.
Now, I am in trouble with the family who owned the kittens, and all blame is put on me.
Also; my estimation is that the kittens were ca. 5-6 weeks old. The "owner" claim they are 8 weeks.
I'd appreciate comments asap. as the owners, animal w.o. and myself are having a meeting soon to discuss the situation.
I returned to the garden daily in hope to find the owners (not knowing they were on holiday). At one of my visits (three days after finding the kittens), I believe I saw the mother - I didn't get a good look at her, as she was very nervous and shy (apparently the cats had been rescued by this family - they said they were stray cats found in the woods). However from what I saw, she looked healthy enough.
I did take photos as proof of their condition; the box, towel, food etc.
I also documented their development while I was looking after them (which lasted ca. a week)
