Can a 240 Volt appliance run on 220?

I was told my home can only go to 220 at the most while I have a couple of 240 appliances. Will the appliance run and if so would it be harmed or would the performance go down?

Yes running a 240 volt appliance on a 220 volt power supply is safe.
