Can a 500k capacitor handle a 1200 watt Pioneer amplifier?

caps really don't "handle" anything. They're not much of a benefit for a 12v dc electrical system at all.

Use it, don't use it.
The issue is the alt. If it produces enough current to run the standard electrical system plus the amp then you're fine with or without the cap. If it's a small alt there may be issues.

You'd have to provide the specific power ratings for the amp (RMS) and the current rating for your alternator for someone to make a reasonable speculation on whether your electrical system will meet the amp's needs or not.

actually 500K means 500 microfarads which is 0.5 farads. It is recomended that you have 500k farads for every 500rms of your system. so if you go by the book, your going to need to double it. mind you i have no idea if your amp spec is refering to rms power. (i don't talk in terms of peek power typically because it's meaningless when talking about good amps)

pioneers are kinda low end so i'll say 1200 is probably peek in this case, which means your probably 600 rms at BEST. a 500k cap you could probably get away with if this is the case.If you want to be safe get a 1 farad.

If you were talking about rms then your going to need to look into a 3 farad cap.
