Can a faulty ignition switch on a 1998 Nissan Maxima cause it to crank but not start?

I am working on my moms 1998 Nissan Maxima. I have to turn the key really hard to get the engine to turn over but it still wont start. Could it be the Ignition switch? What other stuff should I check out? The car turns over good but seems to not be firing.
