can a sky HD box be plugged in to an existing non HD dish to get basic sky channels?

i've had sky before on a basic package and then full with + and with HD, i want to use my plus box to get just basic tv but use the plus to rewind etc. I keep getting a no satellite being received when i use the plus box but not when i use the normal box....

I don't want to use the HD aspect
