Can anyone apply to a church to ring the bells?

I don't attend church because I'm atheist but I do like the sound of the bells ringing and would like to learn how to ring them.

Would they let anyone be a bell ringer or would it have to be someone who attends church?

Bell ringers (campanologists) are usually sidesmen of the church, but if you are interested in learning, why not go along and ask. I doubt they will turn you away!

Probably someone who attends church. And some churches probably have no bell ringers, whether that means that the bells are not actually there, are not usable, or are controlled by machines.

When I was a teenager I attended a Methodist church, and me and a few friends would ring the bell by pulling a rope. Bird poop sometimes fell down on us from the short, old- fashioned bell tower. Also, the thinnest girl was able to grab onto the large rope and go up and down with it as the bell rang. She thought that was cool.

I don't attend church anymore, but have found True Christianity with Jehovah's Witnesses. They don't have bell towers. Or steeples. Or crosses or icons.

Anyone can ring bells, but be careful as one aussie teen found out - they sometimes come crashing down.
