I'm supposed to describe (in a word or two) the melody, rhythm, dynamics, texture, tone color, and mood of each. I've searched online for hours and I can't figure it out.
I haven't had any training in music theory and I'm not a musician, nor am I able to discern separate elements of music just by listening to it (I have listened to both movements). Please help!
No, I really have listened to the music, and I really am not a musician, and I really have not had any training in music theory. I am taking a music HISTORY class, and my teacher is so musically inclined that he can't comprehend how anyone could not be able to listen to music and pick out separate elements. Perhaps it comes naturally to some people, but I am not one of those people. I've tried to tell him that, but he just doesn't get it. He thinks anyone can listen to music and identify what the melody, tone color, etc. is. I know the DEFINITIONS of those, but I can't pull that out of the music by listening to it. Maybe you're so musically inclined you don't believe that either.
As for whether I'm taking the wrong class, it's the one I picked out of a set of options to fulfill a requirement. Since it's almost over, it's too late to drop. I have As in everything so far. But this is the first time he's asked us to do what he hasn't taught us, and I don't know how to do it. When I listen to the music, how do I know what the different elements are? It's all smushed together as I listen to it. I can't tell.
And that isn't just true for these two pieces of music, it's true for any music. I can't describe separate components of any music, including contemporary music. I like to listen to it, but I don't know how to dissect it.
As far as cheating, it's a take-home that we're allowed to use the Internet to research on, in addition to the music. So I'm not cheating. I HAVE listened to the music myself, and I AM allowed to do Internet research.
