Each of five Squires who share living quarters owns a distinctively marked drinking mug. One morning the first of five to awaken was so groggy from a poor night of rest that he inadvertently used the wrong mug. The second squire to awaken found his mug gone, so he also used a mug that didn't belong to him. The final result was that every one of the five squires ended up using a mug that wasn't his own. The five squires were Arn, Gar, Hap, Pel, an Tul. The five mug designs were: a dragon, a horse, a shield, a sword, a mark of X. Arthur's task was to match each mug with the squire who owns it and the squire who used it on the day of the mix-up. The following facts were made know.
1. The mug used by Pel belongs to the squire who drank from the mug with a horse on it.
2. The mug with the dragon picture was used by the squire who owns the mug with the sword design.
3. Tul either owns or used the mug with the picture of the shield on it.
4. Hap's mug was used by Arn.
5. Gar used the mug marked with an X, which doesn't belong to Arn.
6. The owner-user pair for any one mug was in no case the user-owner pair for another mug.
7. Either Tul borrowed Pel's mug or Pel borrowed Tul's.
