can anything be done to improve cell reception on 2 yr old blackjack at+t?

i have the original blackjack through at+t for the last 2 yrs and it seems like recently i haven't been able to get good reception, especially while at work. i like to communicate mainly by texting for convenience at work, etc, but if i don't have a clear signal "send" text, it vanishes in mid-air. NOW... my main confusion is that i have spoken to others at work and have at+t as well and have all "bars" most of the time. so, i'm not sure if maybe the fact that it's older others but it's extremely frustrating, especially if i'm trying to get a msg off quickly and before thinking to check the bars, my 1st instinct is to hit "send" which is usually too late and my msg is gone! help!
