Can BitTorrent users be traced?

I download a lot of movies and TV shows from The Pirate Bay and ISOhunt in order to not have to pay to rent or buy them. I occasionally hear about people who get caught downloading songs and have to pay outrageous amounts of money to the record labels and stuff. So I was wondering if I can be tracked through BitTorrent and potentially be taken to court for copyright infringement.
