Can controllers from one PS3 be used on another?

I have a PS3 that crapped the bed.. but instead of sending it out for now.. my roommate offered me his, and he's selling it for a low enough price, but my question/ concern: is it possible to use the controllers I had for my PS3 on his? or is there a way to "program" them to and from multiple consoles?

Oh yea you just need the usb cord that charges the ps3 controller plug it into a different ps3 press the PS button and it'll work

yes, you just need to press the connect button and it will find the nearest ps3
