can dsi and 3ds download play together?

I tried on some games but i think we have the wrong game or its just because the DSI XL and the 3DS can link together in download play.
 
I have done this with Mario Kart DS, and a few others, Super Mario 64 DS, etc. If it is a regular DS game, not 3DS, If it is a DS game, you have to put the DS cartridge in the 3DS, start the game, go to multiplayer or whatever, then have the XL connect and try.
