Can handheld gaming systems damage your eyesight?

I'm talking Nintendo DS, Gameboy, PSP. The reason I ask is because my father destroyed my DS right after I was prescribed glasses (this was when I was around 11). He told me that it ruined my eyes. Is there truth to justify him doing this? Does gaming on small screens damage your eyesight?
