Can I back up my PS3's hard drive contents to my computer's hard drive?

Using a male USB cable. Honestly, I have more stuff on there that I would like to save than my 4GB data traveler can handle.

Also, if I format my hdd on PS3, what will be gone and what will be saved? Like trophies, messages, contacts, etc. I know game saves will be gone.
