I have a 1998 Dodge Stratus and am fairly confident that the severe oil leak is due to a bad rear main seal and would like to avoid the $500+ mechanic's fee. Getting to it is the issue. I read you don't need to remove the transaxle in order to drop the transmission, but is it possible to get the transmission out without dropping/pulling the engine too? Would I need a lift to do it? Any other tips on the operation would be greatly appreciated.

Those are fun!!
The transmission aka trans-axle will need to be removed.
In order to do so the front sub frame needs to be removed, leave the rack and pinion hanging and or everything that is mounted to it.
I take the lower control arms sway bar and all of that with the sub frame out.
The rear of the engine should be supported.
The sub frame bolts in the rear may be quite rusty and may break off and if so this complicates matters as the captive nuts are exactly that (captive), you will need a mig welder at the minimum.
Hope this helps.
